Two important things to effectively support your child catching up with math

Feb 10, 2022

Halloween in February? No, just showing a mathlete who was hard at work, even though in a costume šŸ˜

Have you ever seen math tutor ads promising silver bullets to quickly catch up with math? Yes, they pop up on our newsfeed every time.

Parents need to have realistic expectations for their child’s achievement in math. Curing long term problems with math, especially for middle and high school students, need intense effort on the part of the parent and student. The problems did not appear overnight, nor will the solutions.

Be Positive

You send your child for extra math help, and after a few weeks of hard work they show some improvement. Give them positive and encouraging feedback.  It may not be at the level of catching up with the rest of the class, or it may not show a big leap of improvement in their grade, but they have been demonstrating their own personal progress! Unlike their peers, they may not be able to solve algebraic equations yet, but now they know multiplications and are starting to understand the concept behind fractions. Soon they will learn integers. Rushing them to be like the rest of the class would just cause them more stress and feel underappreciated, and won’t help to build their confidence and self-esteem.

Be Proactive

Being proactive about your child’s education is also important. Some parents think “My child is not taking math this term so I don’t think it is necessary to get them to learn math now” – even though their child is far behind in class. Only when the exam is just a few weeks away, then they will ask for help. This firefighting attitude, rather than taking action before a problem becomes a crisis, will only provide a superficial solution. The problem is patched, but not solved, because the underlying causes are not fixed.

At Mathnasium, we provide our students with the necessary prerequisite knowledge for success. The old saying “Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” – is never wrong.
