Consistent attendance - and consistent right practice - is the  key to improving math skills!

Math is a hands-on subject, so your child needs to practice as much as they can. Practice makes perfect, right? Well .. yes and no. Yes if you do it right, but if you do it the wrong way or the inefficient way, then it could be hard to correct any bad habits that may arise.

What is an example of a bad habit? An older student who still relies on finger counting. Or a student who calculates 6 times 9 by adding 6+6+6+ .. etc until they have added the number 9 times. Even though the answer could be correct, these habits may hinder their ability in solving more complex problems.

With right math instructions, we teach our students different strategies to approach a math problem, so that they will understand the concept and at the same time be able to use the most efficient strategy.

Having said that, we understand that students are already overwhelmed with homework, assignments and exams, so we don’t assign homework to our students. Whether in-person or online, they practice in front of us, face to face, so we can teach them and ensure that they use the right approach.

Other tutoring programs might give students homework to teach them to be independent, but coming up with a correct answer does not always mean that they solved it the correct way, or that they understand the “why” behind what they are doing. The result? The tutors do not teach them how to make sense of a problem, and students will most likely rely on just one strategy – relying just on algorithms is the most common result of this approach. This approach wouldn’t grow and nurture their number sense, logical thinking and creativity.

So, if your smart kid is not doing better in math even though they have done a lot of practice, see if they use inefficient skills. Retraining their brain is so much possible – they can go far and beyond through consistent attendance at Mathnasium and do perfect practice with us!
