Michael

Michael is a third year student at University of Alberta studying Mathematics, and plans on doing an after degree in Education. He loves Calculus because it is the first topic most students will encounter at the end of high school, using knowledge built up from the previous decade to understand math on a more applicable and diverse level. He likes reading classical novels; his favourite genre is dystopian. He also likes playing Nintendo games such as Mario and The Legend of Zelda series. Below are some fun facts about Michael.

Favorite Number and why: 4 since it is the smallest composite number, as well as being equal to 2+2, 2x2 and 2².

Favorite Math Joke:

(to π): Be rational.  π (to i): Get real.  e (to both): Join me, and we'll make – one.

In five years, I will be: hopefully teaching math or some science courses at a secondary school.

I love Mathnasium because: the one-on-one math instruction between teacher and students not only helps growing knowledge, but also allows deeper understanding and more flexible thinking.

Ethan

Favorite Number and why: My favorite number is 81 because that's the first squared number that he memorized in elementary school.

Favorite Math Joke: My wife is concerned about our son’s obsession with the difference between sine and cosine, but I assured her that it’s just a phase.

In five years, I will be: hopefully working in the field of mathematics or studying meterology

I love Mathnasium because: allowing kids to grasp concepts in a subject that many find challenging is very rewarding.

Sufyan

In his free time, Sufyan loves matching anime, going to the gym, and hanging out with his friends. Below are some fun facts about Sufyan.

Favorite Number and why: 3 because every story can be divided into 3: the beginning, the middle, and the end.

Randy

Randy is going into his 4th year at the UofA where he studies Mathematics and Economics. He has a passion for learning and trying to understand and describe the world around him. You might find him playing games on PC, listening to some records on viny, on the basketball or even doing more math in his free time. His friends call him R.J.

Favorite Number and why: pi because it transcends our notion of classifying numbers. For thousands of years, we have known about pi, a fundamental number in mathematics that governs so much of how the world operates, yet is it infinite irrational mess. So, we shove it under this friendly greek letter and let it work its magic behind the scenes.

Favorite Math Joke:

I am afraid of the vertical axis. My friend always ask, "why?" and it scres me every time.

In five years, I will be: I will still be figuring life out. It's possible that I could be in some even higher education, another undergrad degree, or just working somewhere. I like to think whatever I am doing, I/m happy doing it, and learning to excel. It's too soon to say, but I know I will still have a desire to learn and better myself.

I love Mathnasium because:  it allows students and myself to try math from a new context. There are no more test marks or trying to memorize a seemingly endless list of formulas or algorithms. Students get the opportunity to see math as a powerful tool that allows us to understand the relationship between ideas that govern the world. Math has been developed to condense and simplify things in real life - It is supposed to be helpful- getting to be a part of the journey for students to see math in this new light is so rewarding and has made all the difference for me as well.
