Summer Learning Loss

Apr 17, 2019

Kids cannot wait for summer break. Once that final bell rings they feel like they have been set free, and the next two months are sunshine, slushies, and sleeping in. All the long summer days and relaxing evenings are an excellent break for kids, so what could be so wrong with summer break?

The summer learning loss, summer slump, summer gap, all used to describe what happens when students go on summer holidays. It’s the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer holidays. This learning gap, if not properly addressed in the next learning year, can continue to increase throughout the child’s educational experience.

On average students’ test scores declined 2.6 months of math, during summer vacation. [1] This means that students are not ready to jump into new concepts and pick up where they left off, but rather teachers must give up weeks of classes to review the prior year.

Why is summer is a fantastic time for kids to learn math? First and foremost, summer months provide children with a relaxed environment which is advantageous to clarifying and reinforcing last year’s learning and to introducing new concepts. Without the burden of a classes, homework, and extracurricular activities, children have more time, are less tired, and are better able to focus. These factors create a positive learning environment. Children in summer math learning programs make monumental strides in a relatively short period of time.

To combine the relaxing and fun vibe of summer with math here at Mathnasium of Crowfoot, we will be incorporating hands-on games and activities combined with personalized learning. This allows students to continue to excel in math and prepare themselves to make significant advancements. Imagine the boost of confidence your child will have when they do well on the first review test of the school year. Rather than having to relearn last year’s math, they can start strong and keep improving.

Remember, summer math programs aren’t just for kids who are struggling; they’re for anyone who wants to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
