Mathnasium of Southland Team
Mohsen is the Owner/Centre Director at Mathnasium of Southland. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Calgary. He has a B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD in Petroleum Engineering with a strong mathematical background and excellent computer skills. He has over 14 years of multidisciplinary experience in the Research and Development sectors as well as extensive experience in teaching and training different student groups. Mohsen has been tutoring students in math for many years with great success. His methods focus on the improvement of grades and full comprehension of mathematical concepts, all while helping raise his students’ self-confidence and self-esteem in their own math capabilities.
He believes that professional tutoring in a friendly, fun, and comfortable environment encourages children to achieve their goals. Mohsen chose to open a Mathnasium of Southland because he likes the Mathnasium method and he believes that kids learn better when they have fun while learning. He knows the value of Mathnasium’s individualized teaching philosophies and understands that the concept of each student according to their abilities and interests is the most effective way to teach math. He is passionate about making sure that your child not only understands important mathematical concepts but that they thrive and succeed throughout the learning process.
Mohsen is married with two children and enjoys spending time with his family. In his spare time, he likes to go to the gym and listen to music. He enjoys hiking especially in Banff national park hiking trails.
Diana Hall, Assistant Centre Director
Diana is the Assistant Centre Director at Mathnasium of Southland. She is a certified teacher, gaining her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary. Diana is also the previous owner of a successful tutoring centre in Salmon Arm, BC, where she lived for 20 years. She has taught and tutored students of all ages and abilities and loves to build rapport with each individual. Diana is experienced, inspiring, and supportive. She has extensive volunteer work as past President of the Vernon Vortex Speed Skating Club, and currently delivers food hampers to families in her community. Diana has a passion for math and is excited to bring the Mathnasium Method to children in the surrounding area. She has 3 teenaged children and enjoys sports and arts in her free time.
Emma Choy, Lead Instructor
Emma is a Lead Instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She has a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemistry from the University of Manchester, also she has a Master's degree in Research from Imperial College London. While in the UK, Emma provided private tutoring in Math to high school students and was a teaching assistant in the University’s Chemistry department. Emma enjoys helping students solve problems by showing them in unique ways. She believes that success is built on understanding, confidence, enjoyment, and is committed to bringing all three to the students at Mathnasium of Southland. In her spare time, Emma enjoys crafting and playing board games.
Tommy Trang, Instructor
Tommy is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He is currently a Bachelor of Science student taking Electrical Engineering, with a minor in Digital Engineering, at the University of Calgary. Tommy has always been passionate about problem solving and math, believing that it is an important skill to develop. He also has a love for music. Tommy has gained a tremendous amount of teaching experience as a music instructor, which makes sense, as music and math complement each other. Tommy is excited to share his skills and knowledge with students, helping them become stronger academically.
Mehdi K., Instructor
Mehdi is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He is currently enrolled as a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Calgary. Mehdi's love for Math and passion for learning and teaching have given him many positive experiences with students of varying ages and abilities. He has achieved a high level of knowledge within a variety of mathematical concepts during his study at university. Moreover, has applied many of the concepts and theories into practice, which are giving him a good understanding of the importance of mathematics in different applications. Mehdi believes in each individual's learning style and understanding of Math, making him able to fill the gaps in learning thereby bringing students forward to achieve higher levels. In his spare time, Mehdi enjoys working out and watching movies.
Abel Rojas, Instructor
Abel is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He has a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Manchester, UK, and is a Certified Programmer from SAIT. Abel's work experience as a teacher includes two lectureships from the School of Engineering, at Universidad de la Sabana, Colombia; various assistantships during the course of his engineering studies; and, three years working as a Math and Science tutor in Canada. He strongly believes that quality education is the most important building block of a successful society. With this belief, he has always made time to share his knowledge with others. Abel believes that Mathnasium is an excellent opportunity to continue sharing his strengths. In his free time, he loves playing soccer and exploring exciting technologies like drones and artificial intelligence.
Laura Hall, Instructor
Laura is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She plans to attend the University of Calgary in the fall as a bachelor of science in engineering student. Laura also competes in speed skating and has experience coaching kids at her local club in BC. She has always enjoyed math and its problem-solving aspects. Her passions for both athletics and academics compliment each other and provide a unique perspective that she is motivated to us in helping Mathnasium's students. She believes that everyone should have the opportunity to be successful and this begins with understanding and enjoyment of the subject. Laura is happy to be a part of the Mathnasium team and help the students at Mathnasium to be successful in math.
Amir Kashi, Instructor
Amir is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. Amir has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Semnan, Iran, and has worked over 12 years on oil and gas projects as a designer. He also has a certificate in Process Piping Drafting from SAIT, 2018. Amir has always been involved with numbers, formulas, problem-solving and analysis. He was a Math tutor for junior high school students while he was studying at the university, and he has a great passion to help and support others with a desire to learn and excel at math. His dream has always been to be an instructor, so he is excited to be part of the Mathnasium experience. Amir believes that math should be fun for students. He wishes to transfer all of his skills and knowledge to help students learn math in the best way, through understanding, and not by memorization. In his free time, Amir enjoys solving jigsaw puzzles, watching movies, and working on some math and physics problems just for fun.
Allen Sandwell, Instructor
Allen is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calgary. Allen also has an extensive teaching portfolio, having taught multiple classes in engineering at the university level. He uses this experience in his role at Mathnasium to show students the rich and diverse applications that mathematics can offer. Allen endeavors to challenge students to understand the basic concepts so that they may apply these in a variety of situations, rather than memorize steps to solve a given problem. This foundational method of education leads to lifelong understanding and appreciation of the subject matter, and it shows how useful and fun math can be!
Amit Shalev, Instructor
Amit is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He received his Bachelor of Science from Mount-Royal University (MRU) in 2019, and he is now completing his Bachelor of Physics at the University of Calgary (U of C), April 2021. Amit has had many experiences teaching and connecting with kids, including Cirque Du SAMRU, a school club that he created at MRU where students would learn to juggle, hula hoop, dance, and play with poi. Amit has first-hand experience with ADHD, leading him to empathize with students who struggle in school, and initiating a decision to work at a summer camp with kids and adults with disabilities. He has realized that he wants to work with students to help them achieve their true potential. Amit enjoys Math and is excited to share Mathnasium’s methods of Math with your kids.
Arash Ghafari, Instructor
Arash is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and recently graduated from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Arash has served as a Teacher’s Assistant and has worked as an Assistant Project Manager and Project Coordinator on various industrial projects. He has first-hand experience with real-life applications of mathematics and has been through extensive leadership training. Arash believes that good education, especially in mathematics, can help students to achieve their maximum potential and strengthen their problem-solving skills in life. He is excited to join Mathnasium to transfer his practical knowledge of mathematics to children using Mathnasium’s fun and unique methods.
Jadyn Cuu, Instructor
Jadyn is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is currently a Bachelor of Nursing student at Mount Royal University. Jadyn has always been passionate about teaching and has demonstrated this through her experience as a peer-tutor, volunteering as a youth leader at Foothills Medical Centre, as well as working as a music instructor. Since working with students of various ages and skill level, she emphasizes the importance of personalizing her teaching approach for each student. While she believes mathematics can be very practical, she hopes that others can also find enjoyment in Math by having a strong foundational understanding of the subject. In her spare time, Jadyn enjoys playing the violin or piano, painting, and playing volleyball.
Ali Sadeghi, Instructor
Ali is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. He has a BSc, MSc, and PhD in Civil Engineering with a strong computational and mathematical background. Ali also has experience in teaching engineering courses, including advanced engineering mathematics as an assistant professor. He has always been passionate about solving mathematical problems and enthusiastic about teaching and sharing his knowledge. Ali is looking forward to helping the students at Mathnasium gain better understanding and math knowledge. In his spare time, Ali enjoys camping, swimming and watching movies.
Niloo P. Jafari, Instructor
Niloo is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is currently a Ph.D. student in astrophysics at the University of Calgary. Niloo has enjoyed work as a teaching assistant during her studies at university. She has a great deal of experience in tutoring math and physics to students and children. In her home country, she worked as a teacher with the Young Scholar Club, where the top ten students of the country are taught astrophysics for the Astrophysics Olympiad. She believes that her empowered ability in math and her unmeasurable passion in teaching always helps her to do her best. Niloo enjoys math and is excited for joining Mathnasium to contribute to share the joy of math to children.
Pari Tehrani, Instructor
Pari is an instructor at the Mathnasium of Southland. Currently, she is a Master student at the University of Calgary studying Chemical and Petroleum engineering. She has worked for four years with an international oil and gas company, in her home country, as a process engineer, solving the most complicated mathematical problems, as well as serving as a process engineer's trainer. She believes encouraging students to understand how math builds the world's principles increases their enthusiasm for math, and Mathnasium enhances the potential of students to solve mathematical problems based on analytical and fundamental concepts. As an instructor, Pari believes her role is to strengthen the students' ability to analyze data, think critically, and problem solve in a highly collaborative and inquisitive environment. She enjoys being a part of the community that promotes the expansion of knowledge worldwide.
Sahar Farjad, Instructor
Sahar is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Calgary, in Civil Engineering. In addition to 5 years of engagement in the design and coordination of various construction projects, she also has several years of experience in tutoring math at different grade levels. Compassionate and patient, Sahar always tries to put 100% effort into her work. She loves teaching and finds it very rewarding to help others understand difficult concepts. Sahar is passionate about working with children as they are usually curious, energetic, and delighted about every little thing happening around them. Sahar believes the Mathnasium method is helpful to every single child learning math. Sahar enjoys watching TED talks as she finds them inspiring and educational.
Kate Roghangar, Instructor
Kate is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. She has many previous experiences in teaching mathematics to children and adults, and believes that children are not things to be molded, but are individuals to be unfolded. Kate is excited to teach the children at Mathnasium, as the healthy and fun environment matches with her educational values.
Eve Taplin, Instructor
Eve is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is currently working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, with a Minor in Philosophy, at the University of Calgary. Her favourite topic in math is mathematical logic and set theory. Eve enjoys engaging and guiding students, which complement her role as an instructor at Mathnasium. Her previous teaching experience includes sewing instruction and coaching fencing with a pentathlon club. In her spare time, Eve enjoys sewing, fencing, and attending the gym.
Adrina Sadeghian, Instructor
Adrina is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is currently enrolled as a grade twelve student at Henry Wise Wood High School where she has completed Math 30-1 and Calculus, and will graduate with her diploma with the class of 2023. She has profound experience with kids from her previous babysitting work and has always been interested in mathematics, entering several local and provincial math competitions. In the position of math instructor, her dream is to encourage other kids to develop the same passion for mathematics by helping them understand more challenging concepts. The creative and efficient methods that Mathnasium uses to teach kids such complex concepts make it easy for Adrina to be able to achieve this dream.
Aylar Erfanina, Instructor
Ayler is an instructor at Mathnasium of Southland. She is a second-year Master's student in Computer Science (Cryptography) and will graduate soon. Over the past 5 years, Ayler has had many valuable experiences working as a teacher’s assistant in Math, for students in her home country. Ayler has taught Java programming and Information Theory and Security at the University of Calgary. In addition, she has interacted with family members tutoring and explaining basic mathematical concepts to them. Ayler enjoys working with children, as they are curious and fast learners.
