Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:
Sylvia McLellan, PhD, Owner/Centre Director
Sylvia has always had a passion for learning and for helping others learn. She received an M.A. in Education from SFU (1998) and a PhD in Math Education from UBC (2014). During her formal education she learned the importance of developing "number sense" as she completed research into the ways children learn math.
Prior to opening her Mathnasium centre, Sylvia operated the Shaughnessy Street Early Learning Centre in Port Coquitlam for 25 years. She taught in the Teacher Education Programs at Northwest Baptist College and UBC and mentored many young teachers. Sylvia has seen how strong math skills open up doors of opportunity for children of all ages and she is excited about helping every child in the Langley and East Surrey communities truly understand math by teaching it in the way that makes sense to them.
When she is not interacting with students or parents at the Centre, Sylvia spends time with her 4 young grandchildren - remembering what it means to be a child in this day and age. She and her husband Doug enjoy camping in their 16 foot trailer and playing piano, guitar and flute together. They also enjoy playing with the Garden Railway they built in their backyard in Fleetwood.
Alana, Assistant Centre Director and Lead Elementary Math Instructor
Alana has Diplomas in Sports Science and Communications from Douglas College and has worked with us since February 2016.
