Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. Get a Problem of the Week Ballot from Michael or Cathy and deposit your solution into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. On Friday, a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Jack is sitting in a swivel chair facing north. He spins a half turn clockwise, then a quarter turn counterclockwise, then a full turn clockwise, and finally a three-quarter turn counterclockwise. In which direction is Jack facing now?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Grace is buying a new charger for her phone and wants to know which one has the longer cord: a black charger with a 70-inch cord or a white charger with a 180-centimetre cord. An inch is 2.54 centimetres. Which cord is longer? By how much? Give your answer in centimetres.

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  The number of ants in Karen’s ant farm doubles every day. On Sunday, there are 12 288 ants in the farm. When was the last day when there were fewer than 1000 ants?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Will has four boxes of candles. One box is full, and each consecutive box has one fewer candle than the last. If Will has 450 candles in total, how many are in the full box?
